Case Study – Polished Concrete Floor for New Build in Norwich
Housebuilders in the UK are now actively embracing sustainable materials in order to meet the UK’s zero carbon targets. Polished concrete floors are an excellent example of this. Instead of introducing a new flooring material into an architectural design, concrete is – in many cases – already in place. A polished concrete floor provides a tough, durable finish that also looks stunning.
DirectStone provides specialist floor finishes, including polished concrete. We were asked to polish a 150m² concrete slab in a new build in Norwich. The ground floor location faced onto sliding glass doors which provided maximum natural light for the living/kitchen area.
Bronze Finish Concrete Flooring
At DirectStone we use HTC Superfloor™ grinding machines to create a range of beautiful finishes for concrete flooring. In this instance we wanted to make a feature of the natural light source and we had a flat, level concrete slab to work with. These two factors made the HTC Bronze finish the best option. A Bronze polish leaves the surface paste intact and creates a lustrous, shiny finish.
Our flooring specialists applied silver grey colour surface hardener, which improves the toughness of the paste and provides a durable foundation for the polishing process. The concrete was then ground using an 800g diamond abrasive. The advantage of this particular finish is that it offers excellent reflectivity. The final effect was one of spaciousness, natural light, and subtle contemporary elegance.
