Polished Concrete Kitchen Floors

Are Polished Concrete Kitchen Floors a Good Idea?

At one time most homeowners wanted to cover up their concrete floors with tiling, laminate or carpeting. Now the trend has reversed and those same flooring finishes are being torn up to reveal the desirable concrete underneath.

Lots of people get in touch with the DirectStone flooring specialists to find out a bit more before committing to polished concrete flooring. They love the look, but have questions. In this blog, we answer 6 of the questions we get asked most regularly about polished concrete kitchen floors.

1. Will a Polished Concrete Kitchen Floor Stain?

The kitchen is one of the most popular locations for polished concrete, especially in open plan kitchen/diners. You may have heard that concrete is porous and be wondering how long it will keep its good looks. The DirectStone team always applies a sealant as part of the polishing process. This makes the surface stain-resistant and very durable, so your good looking floor will stay that way for years!

2. Does Polished Concrete Need Specialist Cleaning Products?

One of the many benefits of polished concrete is that it’s ‘hands off’ when it comes to maintenance. You need to keep it swept regularly, as gritty detritus will scratch the surface. Apart from that, it only requires mopping with a mild detergent to keep it looking good as new. We recommend combining this regime with the HTC Twister system for stunning results.

3. Is a Polished Concrete Kitchen Floor Slippery?

The high gloss appearance of our Platinum finish may look slippery, but that doesn’t mean it is slippery. In fact, concrete when polished is no more slippery than any other kind of hard flooring. Should you drop liquid on the floor, we would recommend wiping it up immediately to avoid slips, but we’d give the same advice regarding a terrazzo, or marble floor.

4. Can any Concrete be Polished?

If you want an existing concrete slab polished, a DirectStone specialist will take a look at it before making any promises. Some concrete isn’t suitable for all finishes, and in a few cases it’s too damaged to proceed. There’s always a solution, though. Where concrete is unsuitable for polishing we can install a concrete floor overlay. Once in place, it can be polished to the finish you desire.

5. Is a Polished Concrete Floor Cold?

Concrete is no colder than kitchen tiling. If you’re looking for the luxury of experiencing warm flooring under bare feet in the winter, underfloor heating is a great option. This is only possible if you’re laying a new slab, but the effect is second to none!

6. Can I Choose the Colour?

Yes you can to some degree. At DirectStone use the Hatcrete Industrial Quartz Dry Shake range which is designed to be very hard wearing and is perfect for a decorative concrete floor. The power floating, actual concrete, curing conditions and finish all influence the final colour and the floor will generally be a shade or two darker than the sample.
